get yer dvds out 16/05/04

mogwai celebrate their tenth anniversary in 2005. to mark the occasion, plans are afoot for a dvd compilation.

at this stage, none of the content is fixed but i'm sure you can imagine the sort of thing that will be included. fancy being part of it? stuart has asked brightlight to put the call out for interesting fan-shot footage to be considered for inclusion.

it's very tentatively scheduled for next year (our 10th anniversary!) so now would be a good time to start collecting footage. we won't be able to pay folks but i'm sure we'll give them something nice and credit them. spread the word my good man!

got anything good? brightlight is, at the band's request, collecting footage over the next few months. mail rob-bl@youngteam.co.uk and i'll let you know where to send it. a couple of ground rules:

  • anything submitted probably won't be returned - please don't send your only copy
  • dvd preferred, mail before sending anything else

further info will be published here as it becomes available.

    curiosa - mtv report 08/05/04

mtv's report on the forthcoming 'curiosa' tour, culled from the ever-reliable chain of flowers:

cure announce festival tour with interpol, rapture, mogwai

time to get out the hairspray and black eyeliner again. less than a week after headlining the coachella festival in the southern california desert, goth pioneers the cure have unveiled plans for a full u.s. tour this summer.

the curiosa festival 2004 will feature the cure headlining a bill that also includes three bands plainly influenced by robert smith and company: interpol, the rapture and mogwai.

a second stage will also be part of the traveling road show, with muse, thursday, cursive, melissa auf der maur, cooper temple clause and head automatica rotating as performers.

the cure formed in 1976, and only iconoclastic singer/songwriter smith remains from the group's initial lineup. simon gallup, who joined the group in 1979, is the only other longstanding member in the current lineup. the group plans to release a new eponymous album on june 29, the band's first lp since 2000's bloodflowers. the first single from the album bears the cheery title "the end of the world."

the tour kicks off july 24 in the unlikely tropical setting of west palm beach, florida, and ends august 27 in los angeles. additional dates are still being added.

dates for the curiosa festival 2004, according to a band spokesperson:
7/24 - west palm beach, fl
    7/25 - tampa, fl
    7/28 - nashville, tn
    7/29 - atlanta, ga
    7/31 - new york, ny
    8/1 - camden, nj
    8/3 - cincinnati, oh
    8/4 - cleveland, oh
    8/7 - boston, ma
    8/11 - detroit, mi
    8/12 - chicago, il
    8/14 - dallas, tx
    8/15 - houston, tx
    8/17 - denver, co
8/18 - salt lake city, ut
    8/27 - los angeles, ca

  • a question of blood 03/05/04

a mogwai fan of some long standing, author ian rankin's new book 'a question of blood' (part of his series of inspector rebus novels) includes the following passage:

make my day : a reference to clint eastwood's dirty harry? nobody. she wasn't sure whether she was meant to get the 'cody' reference, but straight away she new what it meant : 'come on, die young'. she knew it because it was the title of a mogwai album, one she'd bought a while back. a piece of american gang graffiti, something like that. who did she know, apart from her, who liked mogwai? she'd loaned rebus a couple of cd's months ago...

the book also mentions 'rock action'. thanks to rita eglinton.

yes! it is a long way in the future (sorry) 07/04/04

today's matador records newsletter mentions a 'matador at 15' 2-cd compilation, slated for this autumn and featuring "one disc of much-beloved songs by matador hitmakers circa 1999-2004, along with a 2nd disc comprising unreleased or too-tough-to-find tracks by many of the same superstars". presumably this includes mogwai?

    ten rapid double 10" 07/04/04

according to this week's insound new releases update, jetset (mogwai's old american label) have repressed 'ten rapid' as a double 10", and at the same time lowered the price of the cd version to $9.99

my fading memory seems to suggest that this is at least the second time jetset have attempted to boost their coffers by re-releasing 'ten rapid', both on vinyl (previously as a single album) and cd. suffice to say, the record contains no new music and costs $12.99 plus postage.

    -rob

    boom bip 07/04/04

we reported a while ago that mogwai had completed a remix for boom bip. the lex website now reports:

a boom bip compendium cd has been put together titled "corymb" (lex021). featuring remixes from boards of canada, venetian snares, lali puna, mogwai, four tet and clouddead as well as the latest peel sessions boom bip did with his band and a few new tracks. the release date is yet to be announced, but we are shooting for april.

bb is also currently doing remixes for mogwai, the free design, her space holiday, donnie darko soundtrack project, lali puna and a harvest records remix project including other artist sonic youth, jim o' rourke, sigur ros and more.

also listed is a forthcoming boom bip ep titled 'morning and a day' (lex 020) - the mogwai remix was originally reported as being part of an ep, so this may be it.

and it seems boom bip's remix of mogwai may be part of a larger 'hunted by a freak' remix 12" project. all this to be confirmed, of course.

a big hand for tom 29/02/04

the more eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed some subtle changes around here this week.

brightlight has been online since march 1998. it was designed and set up by tom houghton, who ran the site single-handed for over a year before inviting me to join him. after nearly five years as a two-man operation, tom has decided that working in the it industry and then coming home to further it commitments is not something he wishes to continue with. his future role will be confined to technical advice and hosting.

i'd like to take this opportunity to thank tom for his hard work on brightlight, and for the expert tuition and advice he's given me. i'm sure our friendship will long outlast the lifespan of both brightlight and mogwai.

to the future, then. as of now, all brightlight-related e-mail needs to be sent to rob-bl@youngteam.co.uk. i intend maintaining brightlight's reputation as the best online source of mogwai news and information, and as ever your contributions are the only way i can do that.

    italian rock action 22/02/04

    thanks to jukka for this:

last night i was at the rock action night at covo club in bologna. great night.

james orr complex was ok, but the really exciting thing was an amazing set from part chimp : explosive, weird, no bass. for the first half of the show they played with two guitars and drums. tim sang and shouted like mad, and the other guitar player played basslines. after a few songs, john cummings joined part chimp on the stage, playing bass, and he did that for 4 or 5 songs.

martin and john djed with a laptop, i-pod and some records.

    neverending white lights 07/02/04

    from pitchforkmedia.com:

neverending white lights is a conceptual art project revolving around one daniel victor, who recently showcased material from the record live in ontario with finger eleven's scott anderson. the project, which has been in the works for two years, is now completed and looking for a label. neverending white lights is dedicated to bringing together disparate artists from the underground and the mainstream to contribute to victor's musical compositions. the first album in the series, 'neverending white lights: act i - goodbye friends of the heavenly bodies', is expected to be released some time this year.

how it went down: victor wrote, produced, and recorded the music, then invited the various artists-- members of mogwai, hum, the velvet teen, creeper lagoon, shudder to think, our lady peace, starflyer 59, cirrus, finger eleven, deckard, switchfoot, 311, age of electric, and supergarage-- to embellish his compositions with lyrics, vocals, melody lines, instrumentation, and farty armpit noises. according to victor "the atmosphere is slow and lush." neverending white lights

from the front page of yesterday's 'scottish herald' sports supplement:

    shiny happy people

outside right has never been a big fan of scottish indie band mogwai, but, aware of our influence in the music scene, they did their best to win us over touring croatia this week. the croats have been drawn in the same group as england for the euro 2004 finals and mogwai took time out between gigs to give an interview with the local media. the band's barry burns told reporters: "i'd love croatia to beat england. please destroy those b******s." he added that he was a "proud celt" and could not bear the thought of england winning. mogwai's latest album is 'happy songs for happy people', available from all good record shops
